THE
OUTFIELD: TRUST THE PROCESS
The
evolution of The Outfield over their first three records is a classic
example of a talented band getting its wings. All three albums,
the near perfection of Play Deep, the rock dominated Bangin’
and the more mature presence of Voices of Babylon, featured understated
differences in influence and structure. While each album held at
least one top 40 hit, the lasting impression of each was a footprint
cemented by stellar individual performance and songwriting.

THE
OUTFIELD - ’61 SECONDS’ DEMO

By
1986, The Outfield’s debut album Play Deep had entrenched
itself in the album charts as a bona fide smash hit. The album was
fueled by four hit singles and gained legendary status because of
the quality of uncharted material. One of those uncharted gems was
’61 Seconds’. Tony Lewis has described the track as
one of his favorites from Play Deep. In a recent interview, Tony
stated that he thought it should have been a single. The Outfield
is pleased to release for the very first time, the ’61 Seconds’
demo recorded at Scarf Studios. The demo has a slight variation
in the chorus that seems to give the track an added gloss. As you
will hear, the foundation of Play Deep was born within these excellent
demos.

EXTRA
BASES WITH THE OUTFIELD’S TONY LEWIS
As
the legendary lead vocals of The Outfield, do you feel today's artist
lack the vocal performances that has set your band apart from the
rest of the musical genre?
No,
not really. It would be conceited of me to judge vocal performances
compared to ours. The Outfield are lucky to have a unique sound
and just because vocalists in other bands don't have a high voice,
doesn’t mean that they are not as good. There's one thing
that a good band should not lack and that is passion, belief and
commitment.

PLAY
DEEP DEMO RELEASED
As
we approach the 25th Anniversary of The Outfield’s multi-platinum
debut album Play Deep, it is only fitting to discover the roots
of these fantastic tracks. The first Play Deep demo to be released
is the third cut on the album, ‘I Don’t Need Her’.
John Spinks explains how the track evolved from its’ heavy
rock demo style to the current pop savvy version on Play Deep.
“It
was written around 1984 and recorded at Scarf Studios. Tony wasn't
too keen on this version as he thought it was leaning more towards
a heavy rock style, especially the double bass drum section. We
did play this song a couple of times live in this format, once being
at the Marquee Club in London. The arrangement got changed during
the pre production for Play Deep in New York after which Tony sang
the lead vocal.
The first 'new' vocal take (for Play Deep) was really weird and
I protested that
point with Bill Wittman after which it was re-recorded in the style
I preferred. This eventually became one of our favorite live concert
songs due to the extended solo and Led Zeppelin medley”.
