A resident of east London himself, Tony Lewis cut his early musical teeth on performing live with his guitar and backing tracks in Pubs around his home town. He belted out cover songs from the Police and others. all the while developing his own incredible vocal range and style. Around 1980 he and his long time school mate Alan Jackman met up with John Spinks in a studio and began to hit it off musically. At that point they began recording some of their own original music and playing it live under the name "The Baseball Boys". When they later signed with CBS and changed the name to "The Outfield", they recorded "Play Deep" which established Tony as one of the premier vocalists in the 80's, with a voice comparable to that of some of the greatest singers rock has known. His vocal talent rivaled that of Sting(the Police), Jon Anderson(Yes), and Brad Delp (Boston).

Tony's vocal talent is never showcased better than on songs like "Your Love", "Nervous Alibi", and "Inside Your Skin". Along with superb clarity and range, his voice exudes so much feeling and emotion, that it's impossible not to sit up and take notice when he belts out classic lyrics like, "Josie's on a vacation far away..."

Considering that The Outfield are a three piece, Tony has the double duty of playing bass as well as performing the lead vocals. Playing primarily a combination of "Yamaha" and "Status" bass guitars, he has layed down the rythym and grooves to all of the most memorable of Outfield tunes. His bass playing really shines through on albums like "Diamond Days".

Playing through a massive "Ampeg" cabinet Tony's bass is also a vital part of the live Outfield sound. A chance to see this incredible singer/musician live should not be missed. Even now in the late 90's his voice sounds better than ever!
